March 27th Journey to Self: Domestic Violence Panel

On today’s show we discussed the “silent epidemic” of domestic violence and abuse.

Our Panel:

Carrie Lower is the single mother of 2 beautiful girls, 3 dogs and is owned by a cat who is convinced she is a direct descendant of royalty.  Carrie now runs her own consulting business and works from her home office.  Having lived with both rape and abuse, she does not classify herself as a victim, but as a survivor.

Diane Tegarden, a survivor of domestic violence, lived to tell her story and is now helping other women who have had to face some of the same fears and challenges. In April 2004, Tegarden published her first book, “Getting Out Of Limbo – A Self Help Divorce Book For Women” which provides step by step instructions on how to achieve financial and emotional independence after a divorce. It discusses many types of divorce, and has a special section on how to get out of an abusive relationship.

Jane McCauley is a mother to 3 grown children.   She is a recent graduate of the University of Wisconsin Whitewater with a B.A. in Women’s Studies, minored in sociology and psychology. Jane currently works at the YWCA in Janesville, WI as an advocate for women who find themselves in domestic violence situations. She specializes in women over the age of 50. As well as being an advocate for elder abuse, gender not withstanding. She is active in the Interdisciplinary Team for Janesville and a partner in leading the YWCA of North Rock County’s Racial Justice Initiative.
