March 20th Journey to Self: Healthy Selfishness
Karly Randolph Pitman joined me today to talk about “healthy selfishness”…it’s not your mothers definition any more!
As women and mothers we have to let go of the conditioned mindset that taking care of ourselves and working towards our own goals is “selfish”, when in fact it is key to being a healthy, happy, and fulfilled individual.
Tips for practicing Healthy Selfishness:
- When feeling guilt for doing for yourself, examine your thinking by writing it down and looking at the reasons…ask yourself, “Is this really true?”
- By practicing good self-care and taking time for yourself you are setting a healthy example for your children, letting them know that it is OK to give back to yourself.
- Don’t feel like you need to fit into a certain “Mommy Mold”, your way of mothering might not be the same as others…and that is ok!
- Set boundaries, learn how to say “no” in order to give back to yourself.
- Engage your family into “teamwork” thinking, not only for household responsibilities and chores, but so your family can support each other in goals and dreams.
- Add some solitude into your life! Spend sometime alone doing something that is just for you.
- Add joy into your life…remember all those things you “use to do”? Bring them back, it will make you a happier person and a better mom!
- Add meaning into your life. Motherhood does not have to be the only meaningful role you have in your life.
