October 30th Journey to Self: Who are Feminists?

This week I am honored to be joined by two exceptional educators Dr. Lauren Smith and Dr. Rebecca Hogan. On Journey to Self this week we are discussing the issues of feminism and feminists. As a Women’s Studies minor at the University of Wisconsin - Whitewater, I feel that I have gained a much deeper understanding into the gender issues that face us in our society. This show is all about raising our consciousness and understanding the need for further change to continue a mission that was set forth almost 300 years ago…equal rights and opportunities for all regardless of gender.
About my guests:
Dr. Lauren Smith is a professor of Women’s Studies at UWW and chair of the Women’s Studies department. She is also the co-author of two books about intercultural families, Swaying and Love in a Global Village–both with the University of Iowa Press.
Rebecca Hogan got an undergraduate literature degree at the University of New Mexico in 1971and a PhD. in comparative literature from the University of Colorado at Boulder in 1984. She was lucky enough to be caught up in the second wave of feminism that swept U.S. colleges and other communities in the late sixties into the seventies. Her eyes were opened to feminism by good old fashioned consciousness raising, and she has devoted the rest of her career to teaching about how women are portrayed in literature and in Women’s Studies to feminist theory and a course on women’s life writing (memoirs, diaries, biographies, letters, and the like).

This was a very memorable show! Again I want to thank Dr. Smith and Dr. Hogan for making time out of their busy schedules to come and discuss the topic of feminism with me today.
We talked about the evolution of the women’s movement, as well as asked and answered questions about where do we need to go next. We discussed women and work, child care, emotional work within the home, and when the media informs vs. manipulates.
